So..What Happened at the Grammy Awards? Best and Worst

Well, as a GRAMMY Voting Member (a Member of the Recording Academy, AKA THE GRAMMY's)...I thought I'd share a few of my observations about this year's GRAMMY awards. So, (for us music lovers who actually care about the direction our music and our industry's headed), here's what happened at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in LA on Jan 26, 2020:

My Houston Area Grammy Member/Preview Party Invite...

Some OVERSHADOWING BAD News:

The big news was of course that very very sadly, this was the same day that Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter were killed, along with several others, in a helicopter crash in the Calabasas Canyon area outside of LA.  So naturally, this put a huge damper on the typical Grammy celebrations.

Other News and Winners:

Young (female!) artist, Billie Eilish, won album of the year, song of the year, record of the year and best new Artist of the Year. Here's what the Washington Post had to say about her amazing Grammy Sweep:

"Billie Eilish, the 18-year-old pop phenom who had the best-selling album of 2019, swept the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, winning all four of the major awards: album of the year for “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”; record and song of the year for “Bad Guy”; and best new artist."  Billie and her brother Finneas O'Connell, wrote, produced and recorded all the songs- mostly about uplifting stuff such as "depression, suicidal thoughts, being a bad guy, global warming", and so forth...
Yes folks, the other talk of the Grammy's this year was Eilish's big fetish for wearing green all over...and take a look at those NAILS!...Yikes.

To me, the biggest news about Eilish was that she has very green hair-(of course!), and is obviously quite humble and unpolished. I also thought it was sweet & cute that she said in one of her (many) acceptance speeches, that she thought that the award "should have gone to Ariana Grande".

In other breaking news, Eilish is of the few female breakout stars who doesn't look (or sound!), like either Taylor Swift or Ariana Grande! ;) (OK so this news was mine...)

Best Pop Solo performance was won by Lizzo, who I think gave a sort of cool performance during the show, not just for her unique voice, and her interesting white furry outfit, but mainly because she plays the flute (like me!). I also loved the performance by H.E.R. because she started out at the piano on her hit "Sometimes", (woo-hoo just like me too!). And then she also played the guitar near the end of her song (what?), AND she sang her song pretty well too. Woah.

Other observations:

Other OVERSHADOWING BAD news: SCANDAL!!

This show was thrown a lot of last minute curves not only due to the horrific Kobe Bryant news, but also because of the hasty exit, (yes, less than 2 weeks before the show!), of ex-Recording Academy head Deborah Dugan — the 1st ever female to run the organization — followed by her explosive lawsuit that alleges gender discrimination and sexual harassment.  By whom? To whom? Why whom? Or is this just another Hollywood #MeToo move?

Seems that a young relatively unknown female star, Eilish, pretty much took it all, so I don't really understand this lawsuit?? Is it aimed at the disproportionate number of male nominated vs. female artists, producers, etc. who were nominated, or was this alleged mysterious affront specifically aimed directly towards Ms. Dugan? And who dunnit? Please do tell us, Deborah Dearest, we want the dirt Sister!

Final Observations:

As I was voting this year, I noticed a lot more rap, hip hop and beat-loop based songs. (Surprise!), and coincidentally? less and less real musical talent, a lot of showy flashy stuff, a lot of trying to be trendy (AKA quiet, short electronically held chorded intros on almost every single pop song!), but a lot less real singing, less good writing and less instrument playing...a lot more electronic programming.

Also a lot of very strange collabs: As in: "Can you say Billy Ray Cyrus & Lil Nas X, etc., performing with just about every other rapper/hip hopper around"?  Lots of pseudo-talented and weird performances during the show too, by some big names you'd never expect like the Jonas Brothers and even Ariana herself.

And where the hec was the real Neil Peart tribute????? I mean he's an absolute LEGEND on so many levels.

I think Eilish won because she and her talented brother didn't give a crap about being trendy, sounding (or looking!) like Ariana Grande, or following current trends, but rather because they're making their own trends based on doing what they want to do, love to do, and are good at. They also sound like themselves. OK! So, summing it up, they were themselves: complete with weird green outfit, some real humility, introspective lyrics, and green matching nails and hair...How strangely refreshing...?

Maybe we could all learn a lesson or two from these two talented young 'uns about being ourselves and doing what we love to do...

So what are your thoughts on all this? Clever observations?

Till next time,
DeDe :)

You Just Can't Make This Stuff Up! The Never Ending Wedding...& DeDe's June News!

DeDe Wins Best New Artist of the Year from the Indie Music Channel.com in Los Angeles on April 24, 2016

The Wedding: A Crazy yet TRUE Story!

So...yesterday afternoon, my Band and I were booked to play at this wedding that was way out in the country pretty far north of Houston. There was like a 95% chance of rain and it was really really hot. We left a little late, and so we took this back road that we found out later was sort of "closed". We were in our Hummer with all the band equipment, gear and stuff, with our drummer following behind us in his SUV. So on this "closed" country road we came to a bridge that was "missing some of the road" that led up to and away from the actual bridge. The 3 of us got out and walked around to check it all out, and then proceeded to "build" a new road to this bridge using some old washed out concrete that we found on the side of the road from the last flood in Houston that had likely washed out the bridge. We eventually made it across this new bridge "road" and then FINALLY got to the country wedding in backwoods,Texas about 30 mins before we were supposed to start-around 5:30pm.

As soon as we arrived, we found out that all the power to the building and the entire property had been out since 1pm. Keep in mind that we were already extremely hot from "building our new bridge". So then we had to setup all our equipment in the dark. It was like 100% humidity and 95 degrees and we were all dressed up in our boots and show duds. And it was SO Very HOT! I felt really bad for the bride and groom, but they were amazing and so nice, very calm, cool and collected (well maybe NOT that cool!) We ended up doing an "acoustic show" outside with our only acoustic guitar, a bongo drum, and tambourine for the guests, with everyone singing along. It ended up pretty fun after all, but it was still like 90 degrees out. They went and got a small generator for us around 7:30, and then the power did eventually come back on around 8pm, but by that time, a lot of the guests had already left due to the heat and humidity.

After all that, we still ended up playing a 3.5 hour show to the remaining wedding party and guests who had "gritted it out"! And unbelievably, the show was amazing. And the bride and groom were amazing. And... MY BAND was absolutely amazing too! There are several morals I'm taking away from this story. The first one is: when one road "closes" another always opens! Another is, you NEVER know what you're going to have to face in life, so sometimes you may have to: 1. build a few bridges; 2. work hard and have a little patience; 3. trust that things will eventually work out; and 4. don't "sweat" the small stuff!

And The Results Are In...My Jan. 2015 Songwriting News!

(OR: How a few Songwriting Awards Take the "Bite" out of Winter for DeDe :)

Hi there!

Winter's definitely here, and I've been hearing about how cold it's been all around the US from my friends, fans & family. Fortunately, we got a bit of a break this week and it's been sunny and MUCH warmer in the Houston area:)

I appreciate each and every one of my fans, and I really appreciate you signing up on my Sign Up page for my monthly fan news, and spreading the word about my music! And I love hearing from my fans, so please check out my About page, and feel free to contact me! www.DeDe-Music.com/About

It's been a busy couple of months, and I wanted to share some good news I got this week. I was named a FINALIST in the UK Songwriting Competition for the 2nd year in a row with my song, Blame It On the Summertime.  Last year, my finalist song was The Plans I Have for You.

I also was grateful to receive some CASH for winning 2nd place in 2 Categories of the 2014 Dallas Songwriting Contest, for The Plans I Have for You, and also for my instrumental version of One Child, which I call, Change the World. These Dallas folks are pretty cool, and tons of songwriters from all over the world enter their annual contest, so it's pretty cool to also get a few nifty certificates from them too.

I really appreciate you Liking me on Facebook, sharing my posts, listening to and purchasing my music. This helps support Indie Artists like me, and gives us encouragement to keep on writing music and performing. I also appreciate you guys in the Houston area who've attended some of my shows and performances. You can see all my upcoming shows here: www.DeDe-Music.com/Shows

Plans for 2015:

I've been writing with my label management (Kevin Dominion Entertainment), in LA. They've worked with Jewel, Hillary Duff and Pink, among others, and we've got great synergy as a songwriting team. I think you'll hear more depth and thought provoking lyrics and some cool new directions in my songs, which are slated to be released sometime around summer 2015.

Best blessings to you and yours in 2015, and all the best music!

DeDe :)

Fall News for DeDe

It's fall here once again, and it amazes me that just like the seasons, how many changes are all around us...I've been taking a little bit of a break in August & Sept. traveling and working on my music. We've got 2 close friends who are new parents/grandparents for the 1st time! Aren't babies the absolute best? They're so cute and so innocent. They remind us all of how sweet yet fragile life is, and how fast time flies!  Speaking of, I recently co-wrote a song with my new team at Dominion, about dealing with life's changes and time passing, and I hope you like it. It's going to be on my new album slated to be released in Spring/Summer 2015.

We've been traveling a lot for work, and taking some time to be with friends and family. Starting to think about things like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and even Christmas...Holidays, and spending more time together and doing more of the things that matter. Speaking of, Kevin D., the President of my new label, has been spreading the word about my Christmas album "World of Christmas" out in LA. He says "This's probably one of the best Christmas albums of the past 10 years. Whenever I'm tired or a little out of sorts, I listen and it cheers me right up!" (Yes, he's been listening to Christmas music in California in September, in all that heat!) I know it may sound crazy, but to me as a songwriter, that's the best part of doing this: when my music can make a difference and brighten someone's day.  So hopefully I'll continue to write more and more relevant music that moves and inspires people.

Did I mention how much I appreciate you for being my fan? Below are a few fun things going on with me in Sept./Oct. Please come/listen/join if you can!  And, I always like hearing from my fans, so please send me a quick note with your news, okay? Oh, and a free download is below, just for you :)
Thanks!!  DeDe :)

We Miss You Robin!

My sister, actress Missi Pyle, shares a hug with Robin Williams on the set of "The Crazy Ones" in Spring 2014

This is a sweet photo of my sister, actress Missi Pyle, sharing a heartfelt hug with Robin Williams on the set of "The Crazy Ones" this spring.  Robin was really on fire during that episode-the one where he presented the crazy eulogy at client 'Conrad's' funeral. Missi played Conrad's daughter...it was an excellent episode and the whole cast was great.  Missi's thoughts about meeting and working with Robin are posted below, a fitting tribute to a very worthy man. Didn't he make us all feel as if we knew him? -DeDe

from Missi Pyle:

"I didn't know him. I just worked with him. One week last year. He was a huge light. I feel so lucky. He brought so much to us. All of us. So personally. I loved him as a kid watched him in Mork and Mindy. He was fearless and on fire. He inspired me to no end. I wish someone could have convinced him to stick around. We need him. Alas. I hope he finally finds peace. Rest in peace you beautiful man."

All the best music, blessings & peace to you!  DeDe :)

A GREAT ARTICLE from TAYLOR SWIFT about Where The Music Industry is Headed...

Where is the Music Industry Headed?
Well, I have to hand it to her, Taylor Swift has managed to write a pretty decent article about the music industry now vs. 10-20 years ago, and where it's headed. Although I'm not sure such a youngster with so much success so early on isn't bit skewed in her thinking, (but aren't we all?), I do think there's a lot of truth to what she says. She basically says that the music industry has completely changed over the past 10 or so years. Its a lot harder to make it and for even good artists to sell their music. And since truly talented artists are rare, it makes sense that our music should be held in high regard. Therefore it should be bought at a price and NOT be free! I never thought I'd say this about Taylor Swift, but I agree!
Read more here: Taylor Swift's WSJ Article about Music

Thanks for reading/Subscribing and talk soon!  DeDe :)
